Season 39 was the 9th season since the introduction of Super Sunday selection.
However, this year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all teams took the qualifying test remotely.
Due to the pandemic, only 18 teams took the qualifying test, meaning every team that took the test had an opportunity to go to NHPBS and film. Filming was postpone from January to March. Also, the 60 second round was eliminated in favor of a "3-strikes" round. This eliminated the need for the teams to huddle up, and kept social distancing in place.
